A Book Close to My Heart is Recognized
"Tei, a memoir of the end of war and beginning of peace" wins 2024 American Legacy Book Award
This Japanese memoir was written by Tei Fujiwara in 1945 after she and her three young children survive a brutal journey home through China, North Korea and South Korea. One of Tei’s children, Masahiko Fujiwara, became a family friend and through that connection, I translated and published her memoir for the English-speaking audience.
Tei’s story is a rare first-hand account of a female refugee. Her story of a mother and children struggling to survive in a world of conflict is unfortunately all too relevant today. As my friend, Ansley Clark noted, “Tei’s story is impossible to forget, a bone-achingly sharp and beautiful reminder of my privilege.”
"Tei, a memoir of the end of war and beginning of peace", Finalist in Multicultural Nonfiction.
